JC aimed at orienting and building the capacity of Egyptian youth on starting their own business, equipping with the needed skills to become successful entrepreneurs. That was achieved through the design, development and delivery of the “Essential Skills to Start a New Business (ESB) training program, which aimed to assist those who wish to pursue the self-employment track and start their own business, through an innovative, adult-learning methodology. The training program was implemented through two complementary modules:
Module # 1 - Business Idea Generation (BIG): The BIG Module aims to assist potential entrepreneurs to assess their own entrepreneurial capacities, and identify, analyze and select the most promising of business ideas. The main outcome of this module is the generation of a feasible business idea and preliminary action plan by each participant. The training uses an active, problem-centered learning approach which explores individual entrepreneurial potential, desire and needs, though, for example, short cases, exercises, self-assessment, and graphic illustrations.
Module # 2 - Start Your New Business (SNB): The SNB Module works with participants that possess a feasible business idea to move forward through developing a detailed business plan; identifying local business support networks and entities, such as incubators and accelerators; and utilizing their entrepreneurial skills in a simulated and safe environment. The main outcome of SNB is the development of a business plan for a new business by each participant. The placement of participants in the second module is subject to pre-assessment by a joint GIZ/EGC-JADARA committee. The SNB training course will be delivered using both the SNB manual and business plan booklet. The training uses an active, problem-centered, adult-learning approach which builds on what the potential entrepreneur already knows. It challenges the entrepreneur by introducing new market dynamics through, for example, short cases and graphic illustrations, and leverages business ideas into feasible business models, whilst enhancing knowledge in financial literacy, sources of finance, and laws and regulations for doing business in Egypt. A prime aspect of SNB shall be the Business Simulation Game, which allows participants to practice real business scenarios, and shall serve as an effective tool to implement knowledge learned from the two modules and to evaluate the participants’ readiness to start and run a business. The training shall be supplemented with individual mentoring sessions, which shall support each participant with fulfilling the development of their business plan.
Both training modules shall employ the method of "learning through application", also known as "applied learning" and "experience-based learning". The methodology to be used in the training program is participatory and depends on the actual involvement of trainees in the process of acquiring new information. The exercises will help to create the best space for creativity and flexibility.
